Yesterday was the rummage sale and bake sale. I (Mrs. Gray) made the executive decision to cancel the car wash in Mr. Gray's absence. It was just too cold and windy to keep you all from catching your death of cold I decide to nix it. That being said we raised $187 in total from the rummage sale and the bake sale. Not a tremendous amount of money but it was a really fun day with all of you. We need to repay Janet for her pre-sale expenditures and then pay for expedited shipping of your T-shirts (we want to get them in time for your first performance). I will post what our final profit on this adventure is after I order the shirts and we pay back Janet. I will leave it up to a group vote if the remainder of the money is deposited into your account or it is put towards items needed for your Halloween party. After speaking with Ms. Lynn today about her fundraising efforts yesterday it dawned on me that our low sales probably had something to do with this horrid econmic situation our country is in. I do not want any of you to take yesterdays flop personally and I want to thank ALL of your for your hard work and dedication. I have never had the pleasure of working with such a dedicated group of young men and young women. You make Mr. Gray and I very proud! Our next fundraising activity will be the teddy bear and cookie dough sale you all have requested and of course the spagetti dinner event.

Yesterday was the cut off to turn in pledges for the Car-Wash-A-Thon...after counting the money twice last night we raised $618 between in person donations and pledges! Great start guys! We can order your flags, poles and the instructional DVD you all want! I will make the deposit to the District Office tomorrow afternoon. I will get the order placed with Band Shoppe ASAP!

The Band Shoppe order comes out to: $460 for 21 poles, 21 flags and 2 instructional DVD's that will teach you the spin moves you all want to learn!

That will leave us with about $158 to work with until our....

The Delhi Unified Music Program will host its first Annual Rummage Sale the second weekend in October. We are seeking donations of items to be sold at the sale. It will also involve a bake sale and a car wash!

Delhi Unified Music Programs and Children(s) Choir

This site is dedicated to getting you the information you need to support our Music Programs and Choir and give you the chance to have a role in shaping the future of our organization.

Musical Happenings in Delhi

There are many new musical events taking place in Delhi! We have formed a Marching Band/Color Guard at the high school that starts practicing Monday September 8 at 5pm in room D2 at the Ed Park. Practices will be held every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 5-7pm.

Also, we have a Children’s Choir for K-6th graders that will also meet in D2 at the Ed Park on Tuesdays from 3:15-4:00. (This program is open entry and will meet until the end of the school year)

Look for a beginning band for grades K-3 to start forming Monday September 15th. Will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15-4:15pm.

Your child has been invited to join the Delhi Unified Children’s Choir. It is our hope that through the exploration of music, art and special activities that your children will learn to mediate cross-cultural differences and become peacemakers. The children will learn how music and art express emotion, creates shared experiences, bridges differences, tells stories, produces beauty and enriches others.

Rehearsals will be held weekly on Tuesday at the Delhi High School Music Building. (The D building) They will run from 3:15 to 4pm with a light snack provided. No experience is necessary just a willingness to learn and to grow. Grades 2nd through 6th are welcome to attend. Parent volunteers are desired and will be greatly appreciated. There is no cost to attend or participate in this program.

What your child will gain from being involved with the choir:

Singing in a chorus or playing an instrument is fun, but it also provides important skills like creative problem solving that can help lead to higher education and incomes as well as person fulfillment.

Music education gives children skills that will transfer over into their reading, their writing, and their math.

Music education helps to create a complete human being who is capable of leading a successful and productive life in a free society.

Our Mission Statement and what we believe: The Delhi Unified Music Program believes that music education for all children is vital for its aesthetic, historical, cultural and educational value. Our program strives to provide students the opportunity to create, perform and respond to music through a variety of experiences and activities.

The study of music in the makes a special contributions to the child's creative development. Music knowledge and performance helps increase critical thinking skills, concentration, self-discipline and self-expression.
Musical experiences engage and affect the student's whole personality providing insight to one's self and humanity, thereby enhancing one's self-worth.
Music builds positive personal relationships with others and prepares individuals to live and work in a culturally diverse society.
Music is essential in the educational process as an independent discipline and can also furnish the ideal avenue for significant interdisciplinary experiences. Just as there can be no music without learning, no education is complete without music.

Our Goals: For your children to be able to

Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
Perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied
repertoire of music.
Be able to improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
Be able to compose and arranging music within specified guidelines.

Our Challenges: We are new and in the beginning phases of implementing our new programs so please bear with us as we get up to speed.

Twelve Benefits of Music Education
1. Early musical training helps develop brain areas involved in language and reasoning. It is thought that brain development continues for many years after birth. Recent studies have clearly indicated that musical training physically develops the part of the left side of the brain known to be involved with processing language, and can actually wire the brain's circuits in specific ways. Linking familiar songs to new information can also help imprint information on young minds.

2. There is also a causal link between music and spatial intelligence (the ability to perceive the world accurately and to form mental pictures of things). This kind of intelligence, by which one can visualize various elements that should go together, is critical to the sort of thinking necessary for everything from solving advanced mathematics problems to being able to pack a book-bag with everything that will be needed for the day.

3. Students of the arts learn to think creatively and to solve problems by imagining various solutions, rejecting outdated rules and assumptions. Questions about the arts do not have only one right answer.

4. Recent studies show that students who study the arts are more successful on standardized tests such as the SAT. They also achieve higher grades in high school.

5. A study of the arts provides children with an internal glimpse of other cultures and teaches them to be empathetic towards the people of these cultures. This development of compassion and empathy, as opposed to development of greed and a "me first" attitude, provides a bridge across cultural chasms that leads to respect of other races at an early age.

6. Students of music learn craftsmanship as they study how details are put together painstakingly and what constitutes good, as opposed to mediocre, work. These standards, when applied to a student's own work, demand a new level of excellence and require students to stretch their inner resources.

7. In music, a mistake is a mistake; the instrument is in tune or not, the notes are well played or not, the entrance is made or not. It is only by much hard work that a successful performance is possible. Through music study, students learn the value of sustained effort to achieve excellence and the concrete rewards of hard work.

8. Music study enhances teamwork skills and discipline. In order for an orchestra to sound good, all players must work together harmoniously towards a single goal, the performance, and must commit to learning music, attending rehearsals, and practicing.

9. Music provides children with a means of self-expression. Now that there is relative security in the basics of existence, the challenge is to make life meaningful and to reach for a higher stage of development. Everyone needs to be in touch at some time in his life with his core, with what he is and what he feels. Self-esteem is a by-product of this self-expression.

10. Music study develops skills that are necessary in the workplace. It focuses on "doing," as opposed to observing, and teaches students how to perform, literally, anywhere in the world. Employers are looking for multi-dimensional workers with the sort of flexible and supple intellects that music education helps to create as described above. In the music classroom, students can also learn to better communicate and cooperate with one another.

11. Music performance teaches young people to conquer fear and to take risks. A little anxiety is a good thing, and something that will occur often in life. Dealing with it early and often makes it less of a problem later. Risk-taking is essential if a child is to fully develop his or her potential.

12. An arts education exposes children to the incomparable.

Delhi teacher opens eyes and ears with energetic arts program

Every detail needs to be taught: how to stand, how to walk, how to hold a flute, keep a beat, twirl a flag. But just three weeks into a new music program at Delhi High School, hundreds of lessons have been learned.

Richard Gray has been on hand for most of them. He is the new director of music and one of the creators of a stirring, all-encompassing program at the school.

"Mr. Gray has lead us in many directions all at once, and they all are good," said Delhi Superintendent Bill Baltazar. "I'm just excited things are happening so quickly."
When Gray started work at Delhi in February 2008, there was no music program for high school students, no instruments and no band room.
Now students enroll in guitar classes, sing in a choir, perform in a color guard.

Gray is a salaried employee with the district, but he does the job of two people.
"It's not about the money for me," Gray said. "Anything I do here after 3:05 I do because I want to."
Gray moved his family to Delhi after hearing about the position. He couldn't resist the opportunity to build a program from the ground up, he said. And he wanted to see more of California.

Gray was born and raised in Lompoc -- where the marching band was a part of the very fiber of the community.
"You couldn't go to anything without hearing the band," he said. He played the saxophone. There were 150 members of his high school band and 25 members of the color guard.

He said he couldn't imagine a homecoming parade or big game without the fight song blaring from shiny instruments -- so he set out to make that happen in Delhi.
The band will try to do a small performance at this year's homecoming. "It will be a great event. A first for Delhi," Supt. Baltazar said.

Lynn Valerio, who teaches music at the other schools in the district, said it will be a dream come true. The music programs in the district have struggled for several years and "the music did die here in Delhi," Valerio said.

She remembers taking rickety instruments found in garages to repair and give to children. She remembers paying rental fees for determined, but cash-strapped students.

She also remembers the day the boxes with the bands new instruments arrived this summer. "It was like Christmas," she said. "From where we were to where we are today is phenomenal."
The program is moving forward at a speed and interest level unseen in the past, but Gray also realized many barriers stand in the way of some students. "We just want to get the instruments in the hands of the students and they will play them," Gray said. "Much like, 'If you build it, they will come.'"So, before practice every night, dinner is available in the band room. After practice, there are snacks. Jennifer Gray, Richard's wife, lugged a huge sack of snack cakes around an entire practice recently.

"She is my rock; she keeps this program alive," Richard Gray said. "She does all of the logistical stuff and all of the paperwork. And we get to spend time together here."
Jennifer was recently doing team-building exercises with the kids to recover from a tough afternoon earlier in the week. They did the note-on-your-back game, the shoe factory and the human knot. The mood was ebullient.

"Now this is the type of stuff these kids would do in summer camp," Valerio said. "They haven't had the chance to do this type of stuff yet."
But they just might. The students in the program are always looking for their next challenge or opportunity, Gray said. The girls of the color guard want to create a winter guard program to appear at basketball games. The choir wants to attend a concert in San Francisco. "These kids are pushing us to the limit," Gray said. "They just want to do everything and keep going from there."
To keep going, they have set up a number of fundraisers: a rummage sale, car wash and bake sale in October, a pre-game spaghetti dinner in November, and there are sure to be more.

Despite the funds already pumped into the program, some things are still needed. The band wears matching polo shirts, but no full uniforms. The flags for the color guard are made from PVC pipe and plain fabric from Wal-Mart.

"As we get some things, we need more of others," Gray said. "It is becoming a snowball."
He thinks the group will be able to meet and exceed its expectations with a lot of hard work.

Putting in all those hours teaches students valuable lessons like diligence, culture and pride, Valerio said. She says her students regularly excel in the classroom, due in part to their work outside of it.

Allen Holder is a senior at the school and plays trumpet in the band. He joined because he hadn't ever had the experience and wanted to pack in more extracurricular credits before college. Holder already volunteers in the community and is in other clubs at the school. He hopes the band will keep other students on a collegiate track.
"I think it's great. It keeps the kids busy," he said. "Instead of going out and doing things they will regret, they are here."
The Grays serve as mentors for students in the program and bend over backwards just to keep them involved. Many nights after practice they can be seen driving students like Sarah Silva home.

"They don't have to waste their time to do this for us. They could be at home having family time," Silva said. "But they are here - trying to be a family with us."
The band does operate like a big family. At a recent practice, the Gray's oldest son, Nicky, 3, kept running away from the group.

"Who is on kid watch?" the high school students would call out in jest, and one of them would run off and carry Nicky back over their shoulder.
Nicky would run off again immediately.

Richard Gray knows how to get his son back in line though.
"Do you want to practice marching with the band today?" he asked as Nicky started off again.
"Yes," the young boy sheepishly replied.

He fell right in line.

"My oldest son, Nicky," Gray said. "He is very musically inclined. Our little percussionist."
But while doting on his own son Gray was interrupted.

"What are you talking about, Mr. Gray? I am your oldest son!" one of his students called out.

Week #2
Lesson: Exploring Rhythm

Hello Parents,

Today your child began the life long adventure into clapping to the beat or for some marching to their own tune. We began to explore different pitches and rhythms today. This was done through the singing of the song "Don't Laugh at Me" and the song "Puff the Magic Dragon". The "Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar" game taught the children about the importance of keeping the rhythm going despite interruptions. The children's choir is rapidly growing. We had 21 students the first session and 35 at yesterday's session...we hope to see more children continue to join in the coming weeks!

Week#1
Lesson: The Torn Heart, Students explore the effects of “put-downs” and “put-ups”

Hello Parents,

Today your child took part in a lesson on “put-downs” and “put-ups”. The lesson was designed by the “Don’t Laugh at Me” Program designed by the Peter, Paul and Mary Foundation. The goal of the lesson was to help your children with the development of empathy, to build their awareness of actions that constitute a “put-up” and a “put-down”, to help them develop a commitment to positive interactions and to help us create a common language around “put-downs” and “put-ups” which will we be expressing with a thumbs up and a thumbs down expression.

We read a story about “put-downs” that was acted out by the High School volunteers and then discussed how it made each of us feel. Then we watched a portion of the “Don’t Laugh At Me” video which introduced the songs “Don’t Laugh at Me” and “Puff the Magic Dragon”. I am sending home the lyrics to both songs so that your children may practice the words this week as we will begin singing the song next week.

It is my goal that the children will learn the 8 songs that are included in the “Don’t Laugh At Me” program and the beliefs behind them. I would like to see the children travel to other schools and venue’s to perform the songs and teach others what they have learned about compassion and tolerance. Together we as a community can help tackle the problems of bully’s and violence with compassion and tolerance.

Beginning Children's Band

Update September 17, 2008

Today was the first session of band. We learned how music was like a recipe in that it was made up of different ingredients. Music is made up of sounds, rhythm and melody. We played rhythm games and the children were introduced to different types of instruments and the sounds they made. We had about 10 beautiful and energetic kids today whom are very excited to learn to play. On Monday we will be introducing them to the recorder and the concepts associated with reading music.

EVERYONE from K-3 is welcome to attend Beginning Band at any time during the school year.

Starting Monday, September 15 at 3:15 till 4:15 in Room D1 at the Ed Park we will start a new session of Beginning Band. Grades K-3rd grade are invited to attend this free after school program.

We will begin with the basics and work our way up...so everyone is welcome. Everyone can play music regardless of age or abilities. Please call Mr. Gray at 209-656-2050 Ext 5220 for more information.

Color Guard

Color Guard practice will run from 5pm-7pm on Mon, Tues, Wed until further notice. There will be a weekly band meeting that the Captain and Co-Captains need to attend on Thursdays from 4pm to 5pm.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am seeking your assistance in forming a Music Boosters PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization) for the Students of Delhi Unified. This organization would be a non-profit whose primary purpose would be to support, encourage and promote music education and the activities of all the students in the Delhi Unified Music Program. Its goals would be to support and assist music program directors and coordinators in their endeavors to educate students of all grade levels in the art of music, to bring community awareness to the achievements of the students and the Delhi Unified Music programs, to foster a sense of pride and spirit in the performing groups, and to provide financial support to the music programs through fundraising.

Current Music Programs include:

High School Piano Classes
High School Choir Classes
Beginning Band Program
Intermediate Band Program
Newly forming Drum Line, Marching Band, and Color Guard
Newly forming Delhi Unified Children’s Choir

All parents of Delhi Unified students and community members are encouraged to join Music Boosters and attend meetings. At the first meeting of the Boosters on Tuesday September 16th at 7pm an election of officers will be held so that we may begin organizational plans and goal setting activities right away. At each booster meeting we will discuss upcoming events, plan future activities, and discuss how to provide enrichment opportunities to the students with the money from our fundraising efforts. Music Booster meetings will be held the third Tuesday of each month at 7pm in the Music Building at DHS. Childcare and refreshments will be provided. Get involved with the education of our children. Any time you can donate to the Music Boosters PTO it is greatly appreciated.

Intermediate Children's Band

Intermediate Band is under the direction of Ms. Lynn Valerio. Children from grades 4-8th are welcome to attend and learn to play an instrument and be apart of the band. Intermediate band meets from 3:15-4:15 on Mondays and Thursday and Wednesday from 1:15 to 2:15 pm. Please contact Ms. Valerio for more information.

Every year the Children(s) Intermediate Band does a concert in May to honor our country's armed services. Here are some photo's of last years event.

The study of music in the makes a special contributions to the child's creative development. Music knowledge and performance helps increase critical thinking skills, concentration, self-discipline and self-expression.

Musical experiences engage and affect the student's whole personality providing insight to one's self and humanity, thereby enhancing one's self-worth.

Music builds positive personal relationships with others and prepares individuals to live and work in a culturally diverse society.

Music is essential in the educational process as an independent discipline and can also furnish the ideal avenue for significant interdisciplinary experiences. Just as there can be no music without learning, no education is complete without music.
